Bodhisattva Pond | 2024

Medium: Biofilm of iron bacteria, mud, leaves, rainwater, lichen-dyed silk fabric, iron, glass, a photograph and sounds played by N-Energy (a power generation system that uses energy generated from the cyclical action of plants and micro-organisms in water).

‘Bodhisattva Pond’ is an audio-visual installation inspired by Mizorogaike Pond, a pond in Kyoto with relict species from the Ice Age, and the micro-organisms that inhabit the pond's environment and their life activities.

The work began when the artist visited the pond and encountered a beautiful rainbow-coloured film floating on the surface of the mud. It turned out to be a biofilm produced by iron bacteria in the course of their life activities, and the artist was fascinated by the cyclical action of life in the invisible mud.

By living with and observing the iron bacteria, the artist was able to recreate a mud pond with iron bacteria in the gallery space.

Working with engineers and sound artists, she also used a system that generates electricity from the energy produced by the biological activity of bacteria in the mud, and uses the fluctuations in the electricity to play various environmental sounds from the mud.

This work was exhibited in the first room of the solo exhibition ‘and the world is mud’, and was paired with the work ‘and the world is mud’, which was exhibited in the last room of the exhibition. Beginning with a view of a physical mud pond from above, the viewer is invited to enter a deep mud world through various audio-visual experiences.

御菩薩池（みぞろいけ）｜2024
鉄バクテリアの膜、泥、葉、雨水、地衣類で染めた絹布、鉄、ガラス、写真、N-Energy（水中の植物や微生物の循環作用から発生するエネルギーを利用した発電装置）で演奏された音

「御菩薩池」は、氷河期の遺存種が生息する京都の池と、そこに生息する微生物の生命活動に着想を得たオーディオ・ビジュアル・インスタレーションである。

この作品は、作家が池を訪れた際、泥の表面に浮かぶ美しい虹色の膜に出会ったことに始まる。それが鉄バクテリアが生命活動の過程で作り出すバイオフィルムだということを知り、目に見えない泥の中の生命の循環作用に魅了された。

その後、鉄バクテリアとともに暮らし、観察することで、鉄バクテリアのいる泥の池をギャラリー空間に再現し、また、企業とエンジニアやサウンドアーティストと協働し、バクテリアの生命活動によって生み出されるエネルギーから電気を発生させるシステムとその電気の揺らぎを生かして様々な音が演奏された。

この作品は個展「そして、世界は泥である」の最初の部屋に展示された作品であり、展覧会の最後の部屋で展示された作品、「and the world is mud」と対になっている。

鑑賞者は、物理的な泥の池を上から眺めることから始まり、様々な音の体験を通して深い泥の世界へと誘われていく。
