Gaze Mirror
The Gaze Mirror is a special mirror installation designed for the rooms of partners to communicate over distances during the opportune moment when their gazes lock upon each other. When neither person is present, the mirror is totally reflective. However, if by chance two individuals are present on both sides of the mirror and looking toward one another, the mirror becomes translucent. The design is careful to allow revelation of faces and expressions only at times of mutual concern. As partners’ thoughts wander to each other, they may subconsciously gaze at the mirror and, if chance decrees, connect with one another. The partners communicating through the mirror see the reflection of the other and their selves.

離れた二つの部屋のそれぞれの壁には同じ形の鏡がかかっている。 その鏡は日常的には私を映す変哲のない鏡である。しかし、私がその鏡にまなざしを向け、そのまなざしがひとたび鏡をすり抜けてもう片方の部屋にいる親密な誰かの視線を捉えた時、私と誰かとの心理的距離はなくなり、その鏡は透明度を増し始める。遠くにいる誰かの姿が露になり、彼／彼女は私を映す鏡となる。 いつでもどこでも電子通信機器を通して“繋がれる”時代に、離れた場所にいる二人の視線と視線が鏡を通してかち合うという同時発生的な機会にのみ焦点をあてて制作された作品である。 過去から未来へと一定速度・一定方向で機械的に流れる連続した時間を表現したクロノス時間とは異なる、一瞬の人間の主観的な時間を表すカイロス時間を強調する作品である。
